What is Acenda's image optimization and DAM specification?

See how Acenda automatically creates the image sizes each sales channel needs, the image file guidelines to follow, and how to fix common image issues.

When you upload a product image in Acenda, the Acenda image service automatically creates the sizes each sales channel, such as Target Plus or Amazon, needs — you don’t need to pre-crop or resize anything yourself. This article covers where to manage your images, what to know about file requirements, how marketplaces use the images you upload, and how to troubleshoot common issues.

Where to manage your images

Product images live on each item’s own page, not in a separate images tool.

  1. Click CATALOG > Items in the sidebar.

  2. Click the eye icon next to the product you want to update.

  3. Open the Details tab and scroll to the Media section.

  4. Click the pencil icon, then Upload Image (from your computer) or Add from URL (paste a direct link to the image file).

  5. Drag images to reorder them.

  6. Set each one’s Type to main or alternate.

  7. Click the Save Changes icon to save.

Updating a lot of items? See How to bulk update product images instead of editing items one at a time.

Image file guidelines

A few practical guidelines for the files you upload:

  • File size: keep uploads under 25 MB. Larger files can fail to process.

  • File type: JPG or PNG display correctly everywhere and are the safest choice. Acenda can’t guarantee how every channel handles other formats.

  • Resolution: Acenda can generate image variants as large as 2000×2000 px, so a source image around that size (or larger) gives channels the best version to work with, especially for zoom and gallery views. A smaller source image still works on most channels, though it won’t look as sharp when a channel displays it larger.

Target Plus logo

Target Plus only

Selling on Target Plus? Target+ sets its own image rules:

  • Original file: Acenda sends Target the original file you upload, not a resized copy, so the file itself needs to meet these rules.

  • Size: At least 1200×1200 px, and 2400×2400 px is recommended. The maximum is 5000×5000 px. Smaller images don’t meet Target’s minimum.

  • File: Under 20 MB, with no transparency.

  • Shape: Square (1:1) crops look best. Other shapes get wide white bars on two sides.

  • Background: Use a white or gray background for the main image and first alternate image. Some categories, such as hardlines, beauty, essentials and grocery, need white only.

  • No added text: Keep text, borders and watermarks off the main image and first alternate image.

Acenda stores and serves your images itself — you don’t need a separate image CDN. If you’re linking to images with Add from URL or an import file, Acenda automatically converts standard Dropbox and Google Drive share links into direct-download links, so you can paste the normal sharing link as-is.

Looking to host supporting files like size charts or instruction manuals instead of product photos? Use CATALOG > Assets — see How to host size charts and instruction manuals in Acenda.

How do marketplaces use your images?

Each marketplace has its own rules for how many images it accepts and where they come from. For example, on Target+:

  • Acenda sends the main image plus up to 15 alternate images, in the order they appear in Acenda.

  • Alternate images come from each variant. A parent (non-variant) listing sends only its main image.

  • If an item has no image set as main, Acenda automatically uses its first image as the main image.

Other channels have their own limits on image count, format, and background. Check the specific channel’s own requirements, and watch Item Issues (under CHANNELS) for any image-related rejection.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

  • What does the Target+ error “Image may contain sensitive material” mean? this is Target’s own automated review, not an Acenda check — false positives are common. In Item Issues, the Attribute Path column tells you which photo was flagged (Main Image or Additional Image 1, 2, and so on). See Troubleshooting Target+ Error: “MINOR_DATA_VALIDATION: Image may contain sensitive material.”

  • Why won't a Dropbox or Google Drive link import? make sure the link is set to share with “anyone with the link.” Acenda converts the normal sharing link automatically, so you shouldn’t need to edit it — but if it still fails, grab the file’s direct-download link yourself and use that instead.

  • Why are images in the wrong order on a channel? drag to reorder them in the Media section and confirm each image’s Type (main vs. alternate) is set correctly, then save.

  • Why isn't a new or updated image showing on a channel yet? images are processed before they’re sent out, so there can be a short delay between uploading a change and seeing it reflected on a channel.

Still stuck? Contact Acenda Support and tell Acenda support the item’s SKU and which channel is affected.
