What is the maximum number of product variants on Target+?

Target sets the variant and attribute limits, so check them before you build a product.

Target+ allows a maximum of 300 variants per product in Acenda, and limits how many attributes those variants can differ by. These limits are set by Target, not Acenda, so they can change. They help shoppers browse product pages.

Short answer: Target+ allows up to 300 variants per parent product. If a product has more than 300 variants, split it into separate parent products. Most Target+ families vary by Size, Color or both. Target's newer variation format supports other attributes for some categories. This is Target's policy, so check Target's Partner Portal for the latest.

How variants work in Acenda

A variant family in Acenda is one parent product with several child variants. Acenda sends the whole family to Target+ together, and Target shows it as one product page with options to choose from.

  • Parent product: Set Group to product. Target calls this the variant parent, so you may see VAP in Target error messages.

  • Variants: Set Group to variant on each child item. Each variant is its own SKU. Target calls these variant children (VC).

  • Variation attributes: On the parent's Details tab, Product Options lists what the family varies by, for example Color and Size. This field only appears when Group is set to product.

  • Variant values: On each variant's Additional Attributes tab, fill in a custom field for each Product Option, named to match it (for example a Size field and a Color field). Your Target+ posting template maps these fields to Target's variation fields.

  • Products without variants: These are sent as standalone items (Target calls them SA).

Good to know: Acenda doesn't count your variants or variation attributes before sending. It does check that every variant has a value for each Product Option and that no two variants share the same combination. If a family breaks one of Target's limits, the error comes from Target+ and appears in CHANNELS > Item Issues.

What if you need more than 300 variants?

If a product needs more than 300 variants, or more variation attributes than its Target category allows, split it into separate parent products.

  • Split along a natural line, such as color family, collection or material. Each new parent gets its own SKU (for example YOUR-PARENT-SKU-BLUES) and its own variants.

  • Keep the same Product Options on every variant within a family.

  • Acenda suggests keeping families smaller where you can. They're easier for shoppers to browse, and Target may show larger families as a filmstrip.

  • Each parent counts toward Target's account-wide item limit. That is a different limit from the 300-variant cap. See Troubleshooting: Target+ error "403 Forbidden - Exceeded Partner Item Limit".

Troubleshooting & FAQ

  • What if I have more than 300 variants on one product? Split the family into two or more parent products as described above, then assign each variant to its new parent (the Group attribute article linked above shows how).

  • What if I need a different variation attribute? Target decides which variation attributes each category allows. If you need one that isn't available, open a case with Target Plus support to ask whether it can be enabled. If it can't, split the family by that attribute instead. If you're not sure what your category allows, contact Acenda Support.

  • What if my error mentions VAP or a missing variation theme? The parent was sent without its variation attributes. See Troubleshooting: "Parent variation type is VAP but no variation theme on parent".

  • What does "Duplicate theme combination" mean? Two or more variants have the same values for every Product Option, for example two variants that are both Color White and Size Large. Give each variant a unique combination, or add the attribute that actually differs (such as Pattern) to the parent's Product Options.

  • Where do I see Target+ errors? In the sidebar, under CHANNELS, click Item Issues. You can also open the item and check its Channel Status tab for your Target+ channel.

  • Why do my variants show up as separate listings on Target? While Target reviews a new family, some variations can appear before the grouped page is complete, and that can take a few days. If they stay separate, check that the parent and at least two variants are mapped to your Target+ channel with the same posting template. See How to manage variant groupings on Target+.
